Since its inception in 1989, The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) has assumed an important and unique role in the history of Hong Kong’s higher education. Started as a distance learning institution with the mission of “Education for All”, the OUHK has since enjoyed rapid growth and development. We respond swiftly to the ever-changing environment by offering programmes that are in line with Hong Kong’s manpower needs. In recent years, in response to the Government’s initiative to increase tertiary education opportunities for secondary school leavers, we have shifted our focus to full-time education to nurture talent and provide valuable human resources for various professions. Over the past 30 years, the OUHK has helped 120,000 learners of different qualifications and background to realize their university dreams.

Confucius once said that a person becomes independent at the age of 30. Thirty years of age is also the prime of life for a person and a crucial moment for setting goals and directions in life. To the OUHK, the 30th anniversary is undoubtedly a significant milestone. It represents the University’s transformation and advancement, and is a record of the great efforts paid by all members of the OUHK. Capitalizing on our foundation for future development, this is the beginning of a new chapter. Looking ahead, with the concerted efforts of the OUHK community through innovation, I have every confidence that the University will continue to raise our academic standards and teaching quality, create more learning opportunities for our students to go further, and achieve greater heights in the years to come.

香港公開大學由1989年創校至今，一直在香港高等教育歷史上擔當重要及獨特的角色。公大初期以「有教無類」為使命提供遙距教育，隨著社會環境的轉變，大學迅速開辦貼近社會需求的課程。近年，為回應政府希望增加中學畢業生的升學機會，公開大學更投放資源發展全日制課程，為社會各行各業培育人才。今天，公大已茁壯成長為一所全面多元的大學，過去三十年為超過120,000名不同學歷及背景的人士圓大學夢。

孔子曰：「三十而立。」人生三十歲正是風華正茂之年，亦是確立自己人生目標和發展方向的關鍵時刻。對公開大學而言，三十周年是一個重要里程碑，見證大學的蛻變與成長，記錄每一位公大人的拼搏與努力，為未來發展奠下穩健根基；三十周年亦是邁向另一個嶄新階段的開端。展望未來，在大學同人的群策群力下，我有信心公開大學將繼續力求創新，致力提升學術水平及教學質素，為學生開拓更廣闊的發展空間，在未來歲月再上層樓 。
