This decade has seen a surprising 10-fold increase in full-time degree programmes and enrolments. The student population was outgrowing campus space, until an extension was completed in 2008 to provide extra space for another 1,600 students to study in an ideal learning environment.

The improvements in facilities certainly spurred more applications, which rose by 46% through JUPAS and 20% by direct entry in the same year. The University lost no time in gearing up for the predictable record high as large numbers of school leavers were expected after taking the new Diploma of Secondary Education examination in 2012.

From the very beginning, the OUHK has kept its finger on the pulse of society, and taken quick steps to address the current and emerging needs of different sectors. Since the 1990s, specific programmes were designed in turn for teachers, nurses, police officers, law practitioners and many other workers to improve job skills and raise professional standards.

Heralding the Government’s promotion of six priority industries in 2010, the University launched a batch of new programmes in three of them Testing and Certification, Culture and Creative Industries and Medical Services. This move opened up paths for young people to be educated for future careers in the fields of films, creative media, nursing, healthcare as well as testing and certification.
